Get ready for your Local’s Annual General Meeting in November

October 31 is deadline for NHU Scholarship applications

Get ready for your Local’s Annual General Meeting in November

Posted October 28, 2008

With November once again upon us, it’s the time of the year when all National Health Union Locals should be holding their Annual General Meeting (AGM).

Section 9, Sub-Section 6 of our union’s By-Laws requires that each NHU Local “hold a regular annual membership meeting for the purpose of receiving annual reports from its officers, consideration of such business as may be required by its By-Laws and the election of officers as required by these By-Laws.”  The AGM should be held in November, unless there are extenuating circumstances.

These AGM’s are the best way for members to get involved with their Local. We urge all our members to take the time for this key annual meeting. You’ll get the latest information on workplace issues and this year’s all-critical contract negotiations.

Even more importantly, you will have the chance to become more involved with the day-to-day operations of your Local for the year ahead.  The NHU prides itself on being a member-driven, bottom-up union.  But, obviously, we need you to be in the driver’s seat!

So, keep a sharp eye on the union bulletin board for information regarding the date, time and place of your Local’s AGM. Better yet, ask around!

However, only full members in good standing may vote on issues before the AGM, including the election of your Local officers.  A full member in good standing is one that has signed a Union card and has not been suspended for any reason.

If you are not certain of your status, start by looking at your union card. If you have one, then at some point you did sign a membership request card. If you know you have a card but cannot find it, please ask a member of your Local executive to give you a form to request that a new membership card be issued.

If you have never signed a membership application card, you can request one from a member of your Local executive. An important point to remember is that paying dues does not automatically make you a member. You must in fact sign a membership application form to become a member in good standing.
