Locals urged to mark April 28 National Day of Mourning for killed and injured workers

Posted April 22, 2010

Each April 28, the labour movement pauses to acknowledge and honour those brothers and sisters who died due to workplace disease or injury.

This year’s theme is: Is today the day you die at work? More than one thousand Canadians were killed on the job and thousands more injured in 2008, the last year for which we have reliable data.

This National Day of Mourning for Workers Killed and Injured on the Job was initiated in 1984 by the Canadian Labour Congress and is now observed around the world. The NHU is affiliated to the CLC through our bargaining agent, the Public Service Alliance of Canada.

In most major communities, Federations of Labour or District Labour Councils organize solemn observance ceremonies marking the National Day of Mourning. These memorial events provide an opportunity to remind our fellow union members and the general community of the valuable and often-dangerous work NHU members perform in the line of duty.

We urge all our Locals to get involved this April 28 National Day of Mourning.

SDA-IIs asked to identify themselves to speed resolution of long-standing grievance

Posted April 16, 2010

The Public Service Alliance of Canada on April 7 entered into mediation talks with Human Resource and Skills Development to reach a settlement on a long-standing grievance relevant to those members who worked at Income Security Programs, Human Resources Development Canada as Service Delivery Agent 2’s from 1995-2006.

One of the first steps in this process is to identify those individuals who had worked in both the in-person or front-end units and those who had worked within the telephone units. To that end, the employer has asked for our assistance in obtaining both the names and PRI numbers of the members concerned. The PRI number is required to assist in both identification and calculation for settlement purposes.

To speed this process, we have created a confidential e-mail address and all e-mails received will be delivered directly to the employer for processing. If willing, members may provide their names and/or PRI numbers to this confidential account. Both the NHU and the Canada Employment and Immigration Union urge your cooperation in assisting those individuals who may have transferred, retired, or passed on or not be aware of recent developments.

We thank you for cooperation and it is our intention to move as quickly as possible to resolve this grievance and to seek closure to this 15-year odyssey.
