Holiday message from National President Tony Tilley

The holiday season gives us all a welcome pause in our busy lives to reflect upon our blessings.

For the NHU, the past year has been one of progress and achievement. As a newly-reconstituted union, we entered 2009 faced with building a new structure and strengthening our Local leadership. It was a challenge, I am proud to say, that we faced head-on with great success.

As I write this, we are continuing to hold our ‘Local Officers Development’ program across the country. This NHU initiative is providing skills development tailored to the specific needs of our many new Local Officers who offered their time and energy to work on behalf of their co-workers.

Much of the past year has been consumed with improving and cementing cordial and constructive relationships with our employers at the national, regional and local levels. As might be expected, this is still a work in progress. While nationally management has been both cooperative and supportive of our efforts, regretfully too many of our members in our regions still face managers whose ham-fisted and disrespectful actions are quite simply intolerable. One of my personal priorities in the year ahead is to continue to address this deplorable attitude forcefully at the highest departmental levels.

I am immensely proud of and gratified by the work we have accomplished together over the past year. On behalf of all of us at the NHU National Office, I want to thank our National Council, our Local leadership and you, the members, for helping in the task of forging a stronger and even more effective union.

The past year has shown us what can be accomplished when we stand together. Going forward, I am convinced we will achieve even greater success.

I personally wish each and every one of you a very Merry Christmas, a happy holiday season and the hope of a successful year to come for all.

God bless.

Dennis, who worked for three years as a lab technician at the Public Health Agency of Canada, is returning to university to further his career by becoming a pharmacist.

Justin is enrolling in Red River College’s carpentry program to learn this high-demand trade. Derek, his father, is a PHAC lab technician and member of NHU Local 50012

Scholarship applicants – whether NHU members or their family members – were required to complete a detailed application form along with a 500-word essay on the topic ‘What is the impact of the economy on unionized workplaces?’

Justin’s and Dennis’ essays, along with detailed information on our scholarship program, can be read on the Scholarships page of our Web site by clicking HERE.

So, congratulations and best wishes to Dennis and Justin, and best of luck in your future endeavours!

Winnipeg Local President ‘ambushed’ by surprise award

Posted December 11, 2009

Monique Willman didn’t see the ‘ambush’ coming. And the Health Canada and Public Health Agency of Canada members of Local 50012 couldn’t have been happier.

Willman, the Iong-serving and hard-working President of our Winnipeg Local, was caught totally unawares by the recent presentation of a 10-year service award from our bargaining agent, the Public Service Alliance of Canada.

More than 80 members attending the Local’s November 19 annual general meeting witnessed the surprise presentation of the commemorative pin and plague by National Vice-President Patricia Todd. The above photo shows Todd (left) and Willman during the presentation ceremony.

Unknown to Willman, arrangements had been made well in advance to ensure the award was available for the November 19 AGM.

Local executive members dedicate their time and energy to serving NHU members, often with little formal recognition. Awards such as this one are but a small gesture of thanks for years of dedicated, voluntary service to the membership.

Members in the NCR urged to support December 13 rally in support of striking museum workers

Posted December 10, 2009

The NHU is urging our members in the National Capital Region to take part in a December 13 event in support of striking employees of the Canadian Museum of Civilization and the Canadian War Museum.

The museum workers have been on strike since September 21. With both Christmas and the three-month mark of this dispute approaching, it is important to make a strong show of support for our fellow members of the Public Service Alliance of Canada,

The PSAC-organized support rally – entitled ‘Our Country, Our Culture’ – will be held Sunday, December 13. A 1 p.m. march from the War Museum on Lebreton Flats will end at the nearby Bronson Centre, where a 2 p.m. solidarity concert will be held.

Further information on this event can be obtained from either PSAC Regional Office in Ottawa (613-560-2560) or Gatineau (819-777-4647).
