Alberta-Saskatchewan next stops in ‘I’m Building My Union’ campaign
Posted January 30, 2008
Alberta and Saskatchewan are the next stops in the NHWU’s ‘I’m Building My Union’ campaign – our grassroots initiative to restructure our union in the wake of last summer’s departure of our Income Security Program members.
As part of his extensive travels to sound out membership views, National President Tony Tilley is meeting with our Locals in Calgary, Edmonton and Regina the last week of January to hear their ideas and gather input.

Locals and Sub-Locals sent new By-Laws for ratification

It may not seem so at first blush, but it’s arguably one of the most important meetings NHWU members will ever attend.
The National Office is asking Locals and Sub-Locals to organize special meetings over the next few weeks to ratify a new set of NHWU By-Laws. The By-Laws are our union's de facto constitution – a guarantee of continued membership control and authority.
The proposed By-Laws were mailed to all Locals and Sub-Locals in mid-January. They have been approved by both the NHWU National Executive and the Public Service Alliance of Canada.
As National President Tony Tilley pointed out in his letter to Locals and Sub-Locals, failure to ratify the By-Laws will derail the rebuilding process we began after last summer’s departure of our former Income Security Program members.
“It is important that everyone understand that we can not operate with our present By-Laws, as we have no way to respect many of them. Enforcing some while ignoring others is not an option. We have been given the road map that we must follow and I ask that you meet and ratify this package of By-Laws as soon as possible.”
