Official launch of our new Convention information Web site page
Posted March 17, 2008
Delegates from National Health Union Locals across the country will gather in St. John’s this August for our first Triennial National Convention.
As can be seen on the main page of our site, we’ve lunched a flashy new graphic to mark the start of ‘Convention season’. We took advantage of the logo addition to rework our main page to provide what we hope is a more appealing and useful arrangement of items. We are continuing to move ahead with our promise to rejuvenate and modernized our Component to meet the needs and requests of you, the members.
A simple click on the logo will take you to a newly-created Web page offering important Convention information and forms.
Additional Convention info will be added in the weeks and months ahead as we get closer to this landmark event.

National President inaugurates regular conference calls with NVP, Local Presidents
Posted March 7, 2008
It’s an initiative that is as practical as it is necessary.
National President Tony Tilley has instituted regular, planned conference calls between himself, National Vice-President Patricia Todd and all NHU Local Presidents.
The first of the bi-monthly calls was held on Tuesday, February 26. Tilley says it was highly productive and received uniformly favourable feedback from the participants.
“Our Locals Presidents are the heart and soul of the National Health Union,” he noted. “The National Office relies on them to ensure that communication flows freely both ways between the membership and the President’s office.
“It’s all too easy to lose sight of the need to communicate and work as a team. These calls allow me to update our Local Presidents on urgent or critical issues, and to report on the results of talks and consultation with senior management at the national level.
“In exchange, I’m better able to keep my finger on the pulse of the membership. And the Local Presidents themselves get the previously-rare opportunity to exchange information and raise concerns about issues happening in their Locals or region.
“Establishing regular, bi-monthly conference calls ensures that we are all able both to schedule these important discussions well in advance and properly prepare for them.”

New By-laws overwhelmingly ratified by Locals across the country
Posted March 3, 2008
Overwhelming ratification by Locals of a new set of By-laws has set the stage for a burst of activity leading up to next August’s National Triennial Convention.
Over the past six weeks, Locals and Sub-Locals have held special membership meetings to discuss, debate and consider ratification of the proposed By-laws, our union's de facto constitution. While several Locals have been granted time extensions to organize their meetings, the required threshold of support has been already handily surpassed.
| National President Tony Tilley, who has spent much of the past three months travelling the country to hear membership concerns and opinions firsthand, said he was delighted with the ratification.
“We have crossed the bridge to becoming a new union, a renewed and restructured organization with an exciting and promising future. While the past several years have been difficult, our members have told me that they are enthusiastic about writing a new chapter in the evolving history of the old NHWU.
“I am particularly gratified that we now have a set of By-laws that are thoroughly democratic, ensuring even greater membership control and authority. We have rebalanced executive power – away from the office of the National President to our newly-created National Council, itself a leaner governing body.” |
