NHWU joins employer in marking ‘Conflict Resolution Day’
Posted October 14, 2007
The NHWU wouldn’t be an effective union if we weren’t willing to go the distance for our members. But we wouldn’t be a smart union if we didn’t try to deal with workplace issues before they spin out of control.
Which is why the NHWU joins with the employer in marking Conflict Resolution Day, an internationally-recognized annual event held annually on the third Thursday in October. The date this year is October 18.

Our practical interest revolves around the so-called Informal Conflict Management System. ICMS was introduced as part of a wide number of ‘reforms’ (most of them bad) enacted in the Public Service Modernization Act.
ICMS emphasizes dialogue and the use of processes such as mediation, facilitation and dialogue between people to address differences directly and early-on. It doesn’t seek to replace the rights our members derive from their collective agreement; it’s simply another tool in the resolution of conflict.
Conflict. We can all use a little less. In our lives. And in the workplace. That’s something to think about on October 18.
