“I’m Building My Union” – NHWU kicks off grassroots process to refashion our union from the ground up

Look for this slogan and logo to become increasingly visible as the NHWU kicks off a grass-roots process that will see every aspect of our union’s structure and services put under the microscope leading up to next summer’s National Convention.
National President Tony Tilley is set to launch what is formally called a ‘structure consultation process’ in Toronto on September 13. The initiative became necessary when our union saw its longstanding Income Security Program members transferred on August 1 to another Component union of our bargaining agent, the Public Service Alliance of Canada. |
Tilley will travel extensively in the months ahead, meeting Local officers and members and urging everyone to get involved in this bottom-up building process.
“We deliberately emphasized the ‘I’ and ‘My’ in our ‘I’m Building My Union’ process,” he said. “This is not a top-down exercise. The NHWU has always been proud of our slogan of ‘Putting Members First!’. We’re not about to change now; in fact, we’re offering our members a rare chance to refashion a union in their own image.”
Tilley said that “everything is on the table” – from the composition of our National Executive to our union’s name and visual identity. He added that he had been highly impressed by the level of energy and commitment of NHWU members in his travels since assuming the Presidency last May.
“We know we are still a strong viable union, from both an organizational and financial point of view. Now, we roll up our sleeves and get to work creating a new NHWU that reflects the vision and needs of our members.”
